Battery Excellence Earns Delphi GM Supplier of the Year Award
FLINT, Mich., May 6 -- General Motors Corp. honored Delphi
Automotive Systems Wednesday with a 1998 Supplier of the Year
award for overall excellence of batteries produced by Delphi Energy & Engine
Management Systems.
The award was one of six that Delphi Automotive Systems divisions earned
from GM. Five Delphi awards, including the one for batteries, were in the
electrical commodity category; the sixth was in the chemical commodity
category.
Selected by teams of purchasing, quality, engineering and manufacturing
experts from GM operations worldwide, companies are recognized with an award
for exceeding GM's performance standards in quality, service, technology and
price.
"With past recognition from GM and other companies comes the
responsibility to exceed standards in product excellence from year to year,"
said Donald L. Runkle, president of Delphi Energy. "As the world's leading
automotive components supplier, we strive to exceed our customers'
expectations."
This is the fourth time Delphi Energy has received a Supplier of the Year
award for batteries since the award's inception seven years ago.
"GM's Suppliers of the Year represent the best of the best," said Harold
R. Kutner, vice president and group executive, Worldwide Purchasing and North
American Production Control & Logistics. "Of GM's 30,000 suppliers, Delphi
Energy is one of 184 suppliers that have achieved the Supplier of the Year
distinction for 1998. This is an honor accorded to those suppliers who have
achieved world-class levels of quality, service, technology and price in
support of General Motors."
Proving that Delphi's batteries are world-class, a field return analysis
conducted recently showed Delphi batteries to be the world's leader in quality
and durability. The study, conducted in 1998 in hot and cold climates by an
independent company in the U.S. and Canada, documents the manufacturer, the
manufacture or in-service date, and length of service.
The analysis once again confirmed that batteries produced by Delphi Energy
were significantly better than its competition. Batteries manufactured by
Delphi lasted 14 percent longer than its nearest competitor and 34.4 percent
longer than the average of all the competitors studied. Delphi batteries
lasted 69 months, nearly nine months longer than its nearest competitor.
Delphi Energy & Engine Management Systems is a division of Delphi
Automotive Systems, with lead responsibility for the generation, conversion
and storage of electrical energy; the flow of air and fuel into an engine; the
combustion process; and the cleaning of exhaust emissions. Headquartered in
Flint, Mich., the division employs more than 28,600 men and women in 27 wholly
owned manufacturing plants, 9 joint ventures, 11 engineering centers and 23
sales offices in 23 countries.
Delphi Automotive Systems , with headquarters in Troy, Mich.,
USA, is a world leader in automotive component and systems technology.
Delphi's three business sectors -- Dynamics & Propulsion; Safety, Thermal &
Electrical Architecture; and Electronics & Mobile Communications -- provide
