Speedway Motorsports Elects Jack Kemp to Board of DirectorsCONCORD, N.C., May 5 -- The Board of Directors of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. today elected Jack Kemp as its newest member. "We are very pleased to have Mr. Kemp as a member of the Board," stated Bruton Smith, Speedway Motorsports Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "I have personally known Jack for several years. His experience includes a Cabinet position, membership in the United States House of Representatives, along with knowledge of the technology sector with board seats at Oracle and Proxicom. This experience brings diversity, leadership and economic creativity to Speedway Motorsports. We are proud to have Jack as a member of our team." Mr. Kemp is co-director of Empower America, a public policy advocacy organization he co-founded in 1993 with William Bennett and former U.N. Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick. Prior to Empower America, Mr. Kemp served for four years as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. He was the author of the Regan tax cuts in 1981 and 1982 and was the first and strongest advocate of Enterprise Zones to encourage entrepreneurship among the poor through resident management and ownership of public housing. Mr. Kemp received the Republican Party's nomination for Vice President in August of 1996. In 1995, Jack Kemp served as Chairman of the National Committee on Economic Growth and Tax Reform, studying how reforming our tax code can unleash the entrepreneurial spirit of Americans, and grow the economy. Before his appointment to the Cabinet, Mr. Kemp represented the Buffalo area and western New York for 18 years in the United States House of Representatives from 1971 to 1989. He served for seven years in the Republican Leadership as Chairman of the House Republican Conference after a 13-year career as a professional football quarterback with the San Diego Chargers and the Buffalo Bills.
