BMW Reports Record Sales; BMW Sales Top 50,000 in Strongest Year-to-Date Start Ever
WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., May 4 -- BMW of North America, Inc.
continued to out-perform all import luxury passenger car competitors, with
year-to-date sales of 50,033, compared to 43,406 automobiles sold during the
first four months of 1998. BMW also reported its second best month ever in
the U.S. as sales in April jumped by 14 percent to 14,225 automobiles,
compared to 12,467 a year ago.
Strong sales of the new BMW 3 Series sedans, the 323i and the 328i,
continued as BMW AG added extra shifts in Munich and Regensburg to accommodate
surging worldwide demand and production of the new 3 Series Coupe, scheduled
for sale in the U.S. in July.
Land Rover North America, Inc. also reported sales with an impressive
April total of 2,182 vehicles, compared to 1,696 a year ago, an increase of
29 percent. Year-to-date sales jumped 54 percent, to 8,640 vehicles. Land
Rover reported year-to-date sales of 5,628 a year ago.
Consolidated April sales for the BMW Group totaled 16,407 units
(BMW: 14,225; Land Rover: 2,182) and consolidated year-to-date sales increased
18 percent to 58,673 vehicles (BMW: 50,033; Land Rover: 8,640).
