Gleason Names David Burns President And COO

    ROCHESTER, N.Y.--May 4, 1999--The Board of Directors of Gleason Corporation (NYSE-GLE) today elected David J. Burns as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Company. James S. Gleason, who previously held the title of President, will remain as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Company.
    Mr. Burns, age 44, has been Executive Vice President of the Corporation since 1995 and previously served as Vice President - Machine Products Group. He joined Gleason in 1978 and has held a variety of positions in both manufacturing and marketing, including leadership in the revitalization of the Company's manufacturing facilities as well as major involvement in the Corporation's acquisition programs.
    James S. Gleason, Gleason's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, "Dave Burns is an invaluable member of our management team. He has more than 20 years of in-depth experience in all aspects of the Company's operations and he understands the importance of all the Company's key stakeholders, including shareholders, customers, employees and suppliers.     Mr. Burns currently serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American Gear Manufacturers Association Foundation. He is also a member of the Government Relations Committee of the Association of Manufacturing Technology and a director of the West Irondequoit Foundation and as a member of the St. Margaret Mary Stewardship Commission. Mr. Burns received his MBA from the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Rochester and completed his undergraduate degree at St. John Fisher College.
