About Renault
Renault, created in 1898, is one of the longest established car and truck manufacturers in the world. Today, Renault is one of the ten largest car manufacturers in the world with an overall production of 2.2 million vehicles in 1998. The company is separated into three major divisions: Automobiles, Commercial Vehicles, and Finance. Renault employs 141,315 people worldwide.
Consolidated revenues in the first half of the year were FRF 121.7 billion (Euro 18.55 billion), an increase of 21.6% over the first half of 1997. Revenues realized outside of France rose by 21% to FRF 75.5 billion (Euro 11.51 billion). They accounted for 62% of the total.
In 1998, Renault recorded its highest level of unit sales since 1983. For the first time in 15 years, Renault, with a market share of 11%, was the best-selling marque in Western Europe, ahead of Volkswagen (10.8%) and put two cars in the European sale's top ten (Megane 2nd and Clio 6th). With an increase of 300,000 registrations compared to 1997, Renault sold over two million vehicles worldwide in 1998, widening its European market share by almost one percentage point. Sales were up sharply in most European countries, and Renault was once again the number one car group in the French market.
The company also made considerable progress in markets outside Western Europe. Renault was the market leader in Turkey and in Argentina, significantly improved its positions in Central and Eastern Europe, and boosted its sales by 20% in the Mercosur. The substantial advance in Renault sales in 1998 was seen as a part of the group's strategy of profitable growth. More information on Renault can be found at www.renault.org.
