Federal-Mogul and Ward's Honors Automotive Designer Larry Shinoda

29 April 1999

Federal-Mogul Corporation and Ward's AutoWorld Honors Automotive Designer Larry Shinoda
    SOUTHFIELD, Mich., April 29 -- Federal-Mogul Corporation
and Ward's Communications today announced the donation of $3,400
to the Larry Shinoda Fund during a ceremony at the Japanese American National
Museum in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Shinoda was a world famous automotive
designer, best remembered for his ground breaking design work on the 1963
Corvette Stingray split window coupe and creation of the 1969 Boss 302
Mustang.
The museum plans to commemorate Larry's lifetime of design excellence, as
well as to perpetuate his inspiration for creativity, through the
establishment of a national archive collection and college scholarship for
students of transportation design.
The funds were raised through the sale of a poster inspired by the cover
of the November 1996 issue of Ward's AutoWorld, which depicted Larry's
impression of how the classic 1955 Chevrolet Bel-Air would look if it were
redesigned for the 1990s. The funds were intended to help Mr. Shinoda raise
money for a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, he died of a heart attack
before reaching his goal.
The poster, costs for which were underwritten by Ward's Communications and
Cooper Automotive, faithfully reproduced the cover of the magazine and
included a panel at the bottom showing the five brands then being marketed
under the Cooper Automotive Banner: ANCO Wiper Blades, Champion Spark Plugs
and Blazer, Wagner and Zanxx Lighting products. Cooper Automotive was sold to
Federal-Mogul Corporation in October 1998.
The poster was first made available at the 1997 SAE for visitors to the
Ward's Communications and Cooper Automotive exhibits. Larry spent a day there
meeting fans, signing posters and entertaining visitors with stories about
automotive design, manufacturing and politics.
In addition to the cash donation, all remaining posters (including some
that have been signed) have been given to the museum for their use to raise
additional funds.
