Thirty-Five Teachers of Mathematics Receive Toyota Time Grants
SAN FRANCISCO, April 22 -- Thirty-five teachers were awarded
today with Toyota's Investment in Mathematics Excellence (TIME) grants of up
to $10,000 each for excellence in mathematics teaching.
Presented at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)
77th annual meeting, the grants are designed to improve mathematics education
by giving kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers added support to develop
and implement innovative mathematics projects in the classroom.
The TIME program, in its third year, is provided by a partnership between
Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. and NCTM, and is one of the largest
national grant programs offered to teachers of mathematics. The 1999 grant
recipients were selected from a pool of more than 500 applications by a panel
of mathematics education experts.
"Toyota TIME teachers continue to set the standard for excellence in the
classroom," said Bill Plourde, TMS senior vice president. "Education programs
are an important investment for all of us, and Toyota is proud to continue its
corporate leadership in this field."
"When we reflect upon where exciting things are happening in the
classroom, the first teachers we think about are our Toyota TIME grant
winners," said Glenda Lappan, president of NCTM. "Their students are not only
benefiting from the excellent projects and materials being developed, they are
also learning to appreciate the uses and applications of mathematics."
Toyota TIME grants are distributed over a two year period, allowing for
extended project-development time. Toyota also sponsors a summer seminar,
administered by NCTM, for grant winners and experienced mentors from the
mathematics community.
TIME is administered by NCTM and its Mathematics Education Trust (MET)
foundation.
