Materials Expert Joins American Iron and Steel Institute Automotive StaffDETROIT, April 19 -- Marcel van Schaik has joined American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and will work with its Automotive Applications staff in the Detroit area as Manager, Advanced Materials Technology. His responsibilities include the documentation, analysis and research of materials-related activities in the automotive marketplace. In this newly created position, van Schaik will develop and maintain a comprehensive marketing database that will be used to help promote the developments of steel and advance its position of leadership as the material of choice for automotive applications. Van Schaik brings more than 12 years of automotive and related metals industry experience in project management, early vendor involvement, marketing and product development. He began his career in 1986 as a project manager at Kick Design, an automotive conceptual design and engineering firm in The Netherlands. In 1990, he joined Koninklijke Hoogovens, the Dutch steel and aluminum producer, as a project manager in its automotive design support team. In this position, he managed steel and aluminum projects as well as coordinated early vendor involvement project teams for both the steel and aluminum business units. His most recent responsibilities with Hoogovens were with the marketing and product development department of the steel strip mill business unit. Van Schaik was the Hoogovens contact for the UltraLight Steel Auto Body programs and continued his involvement in market developments for steel. "We're pleased to have Marcel aboard," said Darryl C. Ultimately, Marcel will become a key resource to the North American steel industry in automotive materials." Van Schaik received a degree in Automotive Engineering from the Institute of Automotive Engineering in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. His degree is the American equivalent of a bachelor of science degree in Automotive Engineering Technology. American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) is a non-profit association of North American companies engaged in the iron and steel industry. The Institute comprises 50 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 168 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
