Materials Expert Joins American Iron and Steel Institute Automotive Staff
DETROIT, April 19 -- Marcel van Schaik has joined American
Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and will work with its Automotive Applications
staff in the Detroit area as Manager, Advanced Materials Technology. His
responsibilities include the documentation, analysis and research of
materials-related activities in the automotive marketplace.
In this newly created position, van Schaik will develop and maintain a
comprehensive marketing database that will be used to help promote the
developments of steel and advance its position of leadership as the material
of choice for automotive applications.
Van Schaik brings more than 12 years of automotive and related metals
industry experience in project management, early vendor involvement, marketing
and product development. He began his career in 1986 as a project manager at
Kick Design, an automotive conceptual design and engineering firm in The
Netherlands. In 1990, he joined Koninklijke Hoogovens, the Dutch steel and
aluminum producer, as a project manager in its automotive design support team.
In this position, he managed steel and aluminum projects as well as
coordinated early vendor involvement project teams for both the steel and
aluminum business units.
His most recent responsibilities with Hoogovens were with the marketing
and product development department of the steel strip mill business unit. Van
Schaik was the Hoogovens contact for the UltraLight Steel Auto Body programs
and continued his involvement in market developments for steel.
"We're pleased to have Marcel aboard," said Darryl C. Martin, senior
director, Automotive Applications, AISI. "He brings a solid background to
this new assignment. Ultimately, Marcel will become a key resource to the
North American steel industry in automotive materials."
Van Schaik received a degree in Automotive Engineering from the Institute
of Automotive Engineering in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. His degree is the
American equivalent of a bachelor of science degree in Automotive Engineering
Technology.
American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) is a non-profit association of
North American companies engaged in the iron and steel industry. The
Institute comprises 50 member companies, including integrated and electric
furnace steelmakers, and 168 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers
to or customers of the steel industry. For a broader look at steel and its
applications, the Institute has its own website at http://www.steel.org.
The Automotive Applications Committee (AAC) is a subcommittee of the
Market Development Committee of AISI and focuses on advancing the use of steel
in the highly competitive automotive market. With offices and staff located
in Detroit, cooperation between the automobile and steel industries has been
significant to its success. This industry cooperation resulted in the
formation of the Auto/Steel Partnership, a consortium of DaimlerChrysler, Ford
and General Motors and the member companies of the AAC.
