Johnson Controls and Canadian Auto Workers Reach Agreement That Ends Brief Work Stoppage at Stratford, Ontario PlantProduction resumes less than 24 hours after union workers take over facility PLYMOUTH, Mich., April 16 -- Automotive interior supplier Johnson Controls has reached an agreement with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) Union, Local 1325, that ends an illegal work stoppage. Yesterday, workers at the company's Stratford, Ontario Canadian Fabrication Products Ltd. plant locked the management team and workers out of the facility. During the night, company and union officials reached a settlement that called for the union to return to work immediately, and addressed certain union concerns. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. The Stratford, Ontario plant supplies seat trim covers used by DaimlerChrysler's Bramalea, Ontario plant. Production at the Stratford facility resumed this morning. "We are pleased that our customer did not lose any vehicle production as a result of this event, and that our employees were able to quickly return to their jobs," said Gregg Sherrill, vice president and general manager of the DaimlerChrysler Business Unit for Johnson Controls. Sherrill said that Johnson Controls and the CAW had signed a new contract for employees at the Stratford plant in January 1999. "Johnson Controls continues to abide in good faith with the terms of this contract -- and we're strongly committed to all conditions agreed to in January. We expect members of the CAW to do the same, and we're shocked and disappointed by the union's violation of the contract. We are prepared to put this incident behind us and to move forward."
