Bayer Corporation ``Donates'' Professor to University of Houston
PITTSBURGH--(AutomotiveWire)--April 14, 1999--As part of Bayer Corporation's ongoing support of science education, the company has "donated" a chemical scientist to the University of Houston for a year.S.S. Newaz, Ph.D., is instructing two courses at the university: Polymer Chemistry and Fundamental Organic Chemistry. Dr. Newaz also interacts with the teaching assistants for the undergraduate organic laboratories.
In addition, Dr. Newaz is working with the university's chemical related departments to establish a separate course that would prepare students for working in the chemical industry. "There is a significant difference between studying chemistry and working in the chemical industry," Dr. Newaz notes. "Our objective in establishing this course is to prepare students for what to expect in real life, to realize the differences between the classroom and the workplace. It will also help students determine whether industry life suits them."
When not at the University of Houston, Dr. Newaz works in customer technical service for Polymer Latex Inc. (a joint venture of Bayer AG and HYls AG), interfacing with customers directly and providing technical assistance. Dr. Newaz spends about one-third of his time in technical customer service and about two-thirds with the university.
Dr. Newaz has been with Bayer for more than 17 years, starting as a research chemist then moving to customer technical service, where he has spent the last 10 years. On a nostalgic note, Dr. Newaz received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Houston. "I see a lot of familiar faces on campus," he says.
