Dana Corporation's Spicer Driveshaft Plant in Bristol, Virginia, Receives United States Senate Productivity and Quality Award
Two Out of Five Honors Given to Dana's Spicer Driveshaft Facilities

    TOLEDO, Ohio, April 14 -- Dana Corporation's
Spicer Driveshaft Plant in Bristol, Va., has been honored with the 1998
Medallion of Excellence by the U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award
(SPQA) for Virginia. The Medallion of Excellence is the highest state-level
quality award in Virginia.
"The successes of our people in Bristol are a source of great personal
pride for me, and should serve as an inspiration for all of Dana," said
Southwood J. Morcott, chairman of Dana Corporation. "Their commitment to
quality earned this recognition and epitomizes many of the best aspects of the
Dana Style."
"Our people can be very proud," said John Smart, Dana Bristol plant
manager. "They earned this award entirely through their efforts. I see this
award as an acknowledgment of the emphasis our people place on excellence and
customer service."
Management gave its commitment and support to the award application, but
Dana people through Quality Teams completed the application. Team members
decided the content of the application, wrote the application and supporting
materials, and made the presentation to the SPQA judges.
"We are all very proud of the Bristol team," said Joe Sober, vice
president and general manager of the Spicer Driveshaft Division. "They
continue to focus on the needs of the customer, and make them the highest
priorities."
Dana Bristol has utilized teams for ten years, and has an 85 percent
participation rate. Their teams-led efforts have produced sharp increases in
vendor-rating scores, quality and productivity measurements. Substantial
decreases in delivery times, waste, and customer complaints have also been
documented.
In the last few years, Dana Bristol has taken the team concept to a higher
level. Some parts of the plant have been organized into self-directed cells.
The cells operate without the daily involvement of supervisors, and are
responsible for hiring and training people as well as for scheduling
production. The cells have direct contact with customers and are responsible
for all aspects of customer satisfaction.
"Our people have really taken up the challenge of self-directed cells,"
Smart said. "They have the ability to make real business decisions, and
because of their involvement they are especially interested in the success of
the business plan. This has been a major factor in our quality and
productivity improvements."
Dana Corporation's Spicer Driveshaft Plant in Atkins, Va., was also
recognized. Dana Atkins received a Certificate for Significant Achievement,
which recognizes a demonstrated, solid approach to productivity and quality.
This award is especially significant in that this was the first year that Dana
Atkins participated in the SPQA.
Including the Bristol plant which was recognized in 1996, Dana Corporation
has had three facilities named to IndustryWeek's list of the Top-10 Plants in
North America since the recognition began in 1990. In 1996, Dana Commercial
Credit won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Dana facilities have
received four major supplier quality awards already in 1999, and have received
19 state quality awards in the past three years.
Dana Corporation is one of the world's largest independent suppliers to
vehicular manufacturers and the aftermarket. Founded in 1904 and based in
Toledo, Ohio, the company operates some 330 major facilities in 32 countries
and employs more than 86,000 people. The company had sales of $12.5 billion
in 1998. Dana's Internet address is http://www.dana.com.
