The Volvo S80 Outsells Established Luxury Sedans Again in March
    ROCKLEIGH, N.J., April 13 -- Volvo Cars'
boldly styled S80 sedan continues to pick up speed in the top tier of the
highly competitive U.S. luxury sedan segment. The Volvo S80 outsold the
entire field of top luxury sedans -- bowing only to the Mercedes E-Class which
maintains its first place ranking -- for the moment. In March S80 continued
to outsell the established top tier luxury sedans such as the BMW 5 Series,
the Cadillac Seville, the Lexus GS 300/GS 400, the Lincoln Continental, and
Audi A6.
During the first quarter of 1999, Volvo sold 8,289 S80 sedans in the
United States, taking 13.1% of the segment.
Volvo Cars of North America's President and CEO, Hans-Olov Olsson says,
"The S80 is performing aggressively against established luxury sedans. Our
new luxury sedan is the first of the new generation of Volvos designed as
conquest cars. We're on track for a record breaking sales year."
It was the best March for Volvo in the U.S. ever, with total sales at
11,768 units, up 12.6% over March 1998.
The S80 went on sale in October 1998. The most luxurious and
technologically advanced Volvo ever designed, the S80 also reflects the Volvo
heritage of excellence in safety design and care for the environment --
wrapped in a dramatically sculpted body.
