Delphi Automotive Systems' Leading Ergonomics Expert To Lead SAE Human Factors CommitteeWARREN, Mich., April 9 -- One of Delphi Automotive Systems' leading ergonomics experts becomes the new chairperson of the Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) Human Factors Committee, effective today. SAE Automobile Body Activity Executive Committee elected Wenqi Shen to the position during the organization's annual Congress & Exposition in Detroit last month. The Human Factors Committee is one of six Automobile Body Activity committees under the SAE Engineering Meeting Board (EMB) Land & Sea Group. The committee's first meeting under Shen's leadership is being held today in Detroit. SAE has more than 75,000 members, including engineers, business executives, educators and students from more than 97 countries. The members use the organization's network of constituents to share information and exchange ideas for advancing the engineering of mobility systems. Shen, 36, who holds a doctorate in ergonomics and a master of science degree in manufacturing engineering and automation, has been a senior human factors engineer at Delphi Automotive Systems since September, 1994. Prior to joining Delphi, Shen worked as an ergonomics consultant at the Institute for Consumer Ergonomics in Loughborough, England and was a lecturer in Industrial Design at Beijing Institute of Technology. As the Human Factors chairperson, Shen will preside over the Human Factors Committee and review human factor issues concerning vehicle seating comfort, driving, interior harmony, occupant vision and vehicle lighting. "As Chairperson, I hope to focus the committee's efforts on actively contributing to the automotive industry by timely and scientifically addressing human factors issues through well organized and diverse technical sessions," Shen said. The Human Factors Committee's major responsibilities are identifying new technologies to be showcased at SAE meetings and exhibitions, planning and organizing human factors sessions for those conferences, and serving as liaison between SAE and automotive technology professionals in the area of human factors. Previous SAE Congresses have covered several human factors issues, including vehicle seating comfort, driving, interior harmony, occupant vision, and vehicle lighting. According to Shen, the human factors aspects in intelligent transportation systems and occupant protection systems are becoming increasingly more important and will gain new coverage in the future.
