Delphi Continues to Expand Product Portfolio in India
TROY, Mich., April 7 -- Delphi Automotive Systems
continues to grow its product portfolio in India, adding localized heating,
ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) modules and heat exchangers to its
broad range of components and systems.
Located in the Greater Noida District, near New Delhi, Delphi Automotive
Systems India began manufacturing HVAC and brazed aluminum heat exchanger
products in the fourth quarter of 1998 to support several vehicle
manufacturers' Indian operations.
Delphi's Harrison Thermal Systems and Chassis Systems moved into a new
140,000-square foot facility in early 1998. Prior to the move, the two
divisions shared a temporary facility in Gurgaon, where Delphi Chassis began
automotive strut and shock manufacturing operations in 1996.
Delphi Harrison Thermal Systems currently employs 60 people to support its
HVAC and heat exchanger production, the latter which includes radiators and
condensers. Delphi Chassis Systems employs 170 people to support the
manufacture of shock absorbers, struts, calipers, drum brakes, brake boosters,
master cylinders and proportioning valves.
Delphi India's current customer portfolio includes Maruti Udyog Limited,
General Motors India, Daewoo Motors India and Telco.
The facility is Delphi Thermal's first wholly-owned operation in the Asia-
Pacific region. "This plant represents another great step forward in
significantly expanding our global presence," said Ronald M. Pirtle, vice
president, Delphi Automotive Systems, and president of Delphi Thermal.
"Locating a manufacturing facility in India allows Delphi to better serve our
growing Asia-Pacific customers, all of whom want their suppliers located in
the region."
"By localizing more than 80 percent of our suspension product component
supply with Indian suppliers, we continue to demonstrate strong commitment in
growing our presence in this developing market," said Guy Hachey, vice
president, Delphi Automotive Systems, and president of Delphi Chassis.
With HVAC and heat exchanger production underway, five of Delphi
Automotive Systems' seven divisions have manufacturing operations in India,
all of which are wholly owned and certified for QS 9000 and ISO 9000. Other
products in Delphi's growing range of India-produced automotive solutions
include catalytic converters, evaporative canisters, wire harnesses, half
shafts, and steering columns.
"There are great opportunities in India, and it's important to be part of
the market now while vehicle manufacturers continue to expand their
operations," said J.T. Battenberg III, chairman, CEO and president of Delphi
Automotive Systems. "We have aggressive plans in the region, and the start-up
of Delphi Thermal's production as well as the continued growth of Delphi
Chassis is a big step toward reaching our goals."
Those goals include utilizing a strong manufacturing base to achieve a
market leadership position in each product line, with Delphi's technical and
systems integration expertise forging that competitive edge.
Delphi Automotive Systems, with headquarters in Troy, Mich., USA, is a
world leader in automotive component and systems technology. Delphi's three
business sectors -- Dynamics & Propulsion; Safety, Thermal & Electrical
Architecture; and Electronics & Mobile Communications -- provide comprehensive
product solutions to complex customer needs. Delphi has more than 200,000
employees and operates 168 wholly owned manufacturing sites, 40 joint ventures
and 27 technical centers in 36 countries. Regional headquarters are located
