Varga Unit of LucasVarity Automotive A GM Supplier of the Year for Latin America
    LIVONIA, Mich., March 30 -- Freios Varga, a business of
LucasVarity Automotive, has been selected for a third consecutive year as a
General Motors Supplier of the Year for Latin America.
    John Plant, President of LucasVarity Automotive, said, "We are especially
pleased that our braking business based in Brazil, the largest braking company
in Latin America, has been recognized once again with a Supplier of the Year
award.  This award confirms the momentum of our strong relationship with GM in
one of the world's most promising emerging markets."
    Representatives of Freios Varga and LucasVarity Automotive received the
award during ceremonies last week in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
    "GM's Suppliers of the Year represent the 'best of the best,'" said Harold
P. Kutner, vice president and group executive, Worldwide Purchasing and North
American Production Control & Logistics.  "Of GM's 30,000 suppliers, Freios
Varga is one of only 184 that have achieved Supplier of the Year distinction
for 1998, an honor accorded to those suppliers who have achieved world-class
levels of quality, service, technology and price in support of General
Motors."
    Awards were presented in five global categories including electrical,
chemical, logistics, metallic and machinery and equipment.
    LucasVarity Automotive is headquartered in Livonia, Mich., and produces
braking, electrical and electronic systems, diesel systems and aftermarket
replacement parts for the global automotive industry.
    It is a division of LucasVarity plc , which designs,
manufactures and supplies advanced technology systems, products, and services
