AK Steel Earns Supplier of the Year Honors From General Motors
    MIDDLETOWN, Ohio, March 29 -- AK Steel has earned
Supplier of the Year honors from General Motors , the world's
largest automobile and manufacturing company.  Barely one half of one percent
of GM's 30,000 worldwide suppliers earned the distinction for 1998.
    "AK Steel is a premier supplier to GM's Metallic commodity group of
Worldwide Purchasing," said John Stiles, executive director, Worldwide
Purchasing, Metallic.
    AK Steel supplies a variety of flat-rolled steel products to a number of
General Motors facilities in North America.  More than half of AK Steel's
annual shipments are directed to the automotive and light truck market.
    "AK Steel is known throughout the industry for its expertise in producing
the highest quality products for the most demanding applications," said AK
Steel chairman and chief executive officer Richard M. Wardrop.  "This
prestigious award from General Motors is a tribute to the tireless efforts of
the 5,800 employees of AK Steel."
    AK Steel produces carbon and stainless flat-rolled steel for automotive,
appliance, construction and other markets.  The company employs about
5,800 people in plants and offices in Middletown, Ashland, Kentucky and
Rockport, Indiana.
