GM Selects Sun Microsystems as the Platform of Choice to Power Its Mission-Critical Applications for Its Online BuyPower ProgramGM Turns to Sun for Best-in-Class Performance and Unmatched Reliability and Scalability PALO ALTO, Calif., March 11 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that the world's largest automobile manufacturer -- General Motors Corporation -- has selected Sun as its primary server platform to handle its mission-critical tasks related to its national online car-buying service, BuyPower. Running exclusively on Sun Enterprise(TM) servers, the system delivers high-performance and reliability for GM's large-scale requirements today and tomorrow. BuyPower goes national today with more than 5,600 dealers. It marks GM's most comprehensive Web site ever deployed. Leveraging Sun's high-performance server and software platforms, the system runs on the Sun Enterprise 4000 server, Sun Enterprise 450, the Sun Enterprise 3500 server, and the Solaris Operating Environment(TM) software. The system also uses the Sun Enterprise Cluster 2.1 software to manage database transactions and the Sun StorEdge(TM) A5000 storage system.
