Bethlehem Steel Secures Long-Term Contract with GM; Earns GM Supplier Award for Fourth Consecutive YearBETHLEHEM, Pa., March 4 -- In response to media inquiries concerning Bethlehem Steel Corporation's long term steel contract with General Motors , the following statement is attributable to Curtis H. Barnette, chairman and chief executive officer of Bethlehem: "Bethlehem is very pleased to participate in GM's global steel sourcing program. Because of Bethlehem's policy to not discuss the specific details of its relationships with any of its customers, we will not be able to comment on the length of the contract, its value or other terms. We have, however, had multi-year contracts in the past with GM. "Bethlehem's successful participation in the GM global steel sourcing program is based on our ability to provide products that meet GM's requirements in terms of quality, service, price and technology. There are many benefits to our participating in this program. "Bethlehem can plan its production over a longer period of time. A consistent load on our facilities helps us with our short term business planning and longer term in our strategic planning. With longer agreements Bethlehem can focus on the applications of new technology to enhance product performance and customer cost effectiveness as well as to improve its product mix to better serve our customers. "Bethlehem has the largest and most technologically advanced research, development and technical support staff in North America, and has effectively maintained a close technical relationship with its customers. We have partnered to improve the quality and performance of our steel for GM. "Bethlehem's consistent and excellent performance with GM has earned us a GM Supplier of the Year award for the fourth consecutive year. "Bethlehem is pursuing long-term contracts with other customers as well as with our own key suppliers."
