Worldwide DENSO Plants to Achieve ISO 14001 Certification by Year-End 1999
    DETROIT, March 2 -- DENSO expects 57 of its 58 worldwide
manufacturing facilities in 16 countries to achieve ISO 14001 certification by
the end of this year. This includes 14 North American plants.
    According to Dennis Dawson, vice president, DENSO International America,
Inc., Southfield, Mich., "ISO 14000, a globally recognized and totally
voluntary standard of excellence for environmental management, promotes the
establishment and certification of environmental management systems (EMS) that
proactively identify and address issues of potential environmental
significance. These ISO-certified systems must include environmentally based
objectives and targets, periodic review and a commitment to continuous
improvement."
    All 13 of DENSO's Japanese plants already have been certified.
    Five of the 12 North American DENSO manufacturing facilities have been
certified.  They are:

    * DENSO Manufacturing Michigan, Inc., Battle Creek, Mich., which produces
automotive evaporators, condensers, radiators and heater cores;
    * DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee, Inc., Maryville and Athens, Tenn., which
produces starters, alternators, instruments and instrument clusters,
electronic control units, pressure sensors, oxygen sensors and fuel injectors;
    * DENSO Sales California, Inc., Long Beach, Calif., which assembles air
conditioning kits and fittings and portable air conditioning units;
    * ASMO North Carolina, Inc., Statesville, N.C., which produces blower
motors, cooling fan motors and power window motors, and
    * ASMO Greenville of North Carolina, Inc., Greenville, N.C., which
produces windshield wiper systems, windshield washer pumps, servo motors and
radiator fan motors.

    Two new North American facilities expect to be certified in 2000. One has
not yet started production.
    Of DENSO's four European manufacturing facilities, two are currently ISO
14001-certified:

    * DENSO Manufacturing UK Ltd., Telford, Shropshire, United Kingdom, which
manufactures air conditioners and heaters;
    * DENSO Marston Ltd., Shipley, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, which
produces radiators, oil coolers and intercoolers.

    Worldwide DENSO sales for the 1997-98 fiscal year totaled nearly $13
billion. DENSO operates in 25 countries with 69,000 employees (consolidated
figure). North American consolidated sales are estimated at $3 billion for
1998. DENSO employs more than 11,000 people at 16 sites in North America.
