Southern California Fights Air Pollution Using GPS Vehicle Tracking Technology
L.A.'s 'Pollution Police' Uses GPS and Wireless Data to Streamline Operations

TORRANCE, Calif., March 2 -- Radio Satellite Integrators,
Inc. (RSI), a global provider of high-performance integrated Automatic Vehicle
Location (AVL) systems and object tracking solutions utilizing GPS, announced
its completion of an innovative project for the South Coast Air Quality
Management District (AQMD), the state agency responsible for cutting
air pollution in greater Los Angeles.
RSI's new system integrates BellSouth Wireless Data services, ESRI GIS
mapping technology, GPS data, Toshiba Portege laptops and proprietary hardware
and software from RSI. It allows AQMD inspectors to download field
assignments each day, file reports, access Internet e-mail, perform SQL
database queries, and immediately view the most direct driving route to the
next inspection site, directly from their vehicles.
"By letting inspectors download and file data directly from their cars,
our system eliminates the need for inspectors to make frequent visits to the
office, and it also ensures they have proper directions to their destinations.
Traffic reductions and time savings alone have boosted productivity for the
AQMD," Jonathan Michels, President of Radio Satellite Integrators. "More
importantly, by significantly improving the efficiency of field inspections,
our integrated state-of-the-art technologies are helping the AQMD identify and
correct problems faster, which impacts air quality for the nation's largest
metropolitan area."
AQMD sought a solution that would make vehicle tracking and communication
more efficient for base dispatchers and field inspectors. The agency chose
RSI based on the firm's proven experience in providing cost-effective
computing solutions that integrate GPS and wireless communication technology.
