TRW Module Contract with DaimlerChrysler To Create Jobs and Require New Plant in Toledo, OhioDETROIT, March 2 -- TRW announced today that it will set up a new manufacturing facility in Toledo, Ohio, to assemble various chassis modules to support a DaimlerChrysler Jeep(R) platform and the Toledo Assembly Operations. In making the announcement here today at the 1999 Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International Congress & Exposition, Robert M. Varga, vice president and general manager of TRW Chassis Systems, said this DaimlerChrysler business will create about 100 jobs at the facility. To meet just-in-time delivery requirements, TRW will locate its production within 10 miles of DaimlerChrysler's assembly operations on Parkway and Stickney Avenue in Toledo. TRW is expected to move into its new facility in early 2000. DaimlerChrysler has announced that its new Toledo Jeep assembly plant will produce Jeep sport-utility vehicles for sale worldwide beginning in 2001. TRW will continue to coordinate various program activities from its Sterling Heights, Mich. facility and from its Linkage & Suspension operations in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, while some personnel will take up residence at DaimlerChrysler. The contract calls for TRW to coordinate steering system responsibility as well as to supply various chassis and suspension modules for the DaimlerChrysler Jeep platform. The company also will supply the automaker with seat belts, air bags, electronics and switches for the vehicle platform. Varga said that providing modules and systems for automaker assembly can dramatically reduce assembly time and costs, while improving productivity, quality and floor space utilization. A full-service supplier with total steering and suspension engineering capabilities, TRW's Chassis Systems business offers a wide array of wheel-to- wheel components, systems and modules. Products include rack-and-pinion steering gears, power-steering pumps and hoses, complete hydraulic steering systems, linkage and suspension components, chassis modules and suspension systems, as well as the broadest portfolio of electrically assisted steering systems available today.
