Federal-Mogul Lighting Products Offers LED Technology

Federal-Mogul Lighting Products Offers LED Technology for Cars and Trucks
    SOUTHFIELD, Mich., March 1 -- Federal-Mogul Corporation's
Lighting Products group offers LED (light emitting diode)
technology for running lamps and signal lamps on cars and trucks, which is a
superior replacement for incandescent lamps.
"The LED is a small, non-incandescent, epoxy-encapsulated light source,
used primarily on trucks because of the lamp's longevity and reduced
maintenance required," said Bob Kohne, engineering group manager from the
company's Logansport, Indiana facility. "The LED eliminates the major failure
mode of incandescent bulbs, which contain filaments that break. LED's don't
have filaments -- an LED lamp glows when energized by electricity -- which is
especially attractive for high-vibration applications, such as trucks and
trailers."
Why choose LED as a replacement for incandescent lamps for automotive and
truck use? Here are a few reasons:

    * Maintenance savings -- LED's last for more than 100,000 hours
(approximately 11 years) -- six times longer than incandescent lamps
    * Increased efficiency -- LED's require 85 percent less power consumption
than incandescent bulbs
    * Enhanced safety -- LED's provide quicker stopping distance for trailing
vehicles because of a faster brake light response - four-times faster than
incandescent bulbs
    * Easy repair and retrofit -- LED's can be designed to replace standard
incandescent lamps
    * Operates at full intensity at low voltage -- the intensity of the
incandescent lamps decrease as the voltage drops

Superior design and improved packaging allows for the same amount of
light, but in a smaller space and it also offers opportunities for unique
styling options.
"LED lamps were first used in the center-mounted stop lamp of General
Motor Corporation's sport-utility vehicles -- the Chevrolet Blazer, GMC
Suburban, as well as the Cadillac Seville," said Kohne. "The newest
applications of LED lamps will be in the heavy and light-truck markets. LED
lamps are currently being used on postal trucks and commercial buses and
trailers because of the longevity and wear-resistance compared to conventional
lamps. We'll see additional use for car signal lamps, particularly where
designs necessitate smaller packaging spaces."
