Delphi Enters 1999 SAE on Track With Plans for IndependenceTROY, Mich., March 1 -- Delphi Automotive Systems continues to build its strengths as a supplier in the automotive components industry of high-quality, innovative components, systems, and modules, said J.T. Battenberg III, Delphi's chairman, chief executive officer, and president. With 1998 annual revenues of $28.5 billion, Delphi ranks among the top 30 U.S. companies, and is the world's most diversified automotive products and technology supplier. "We currently do business with all the world's major vehicle manufacturers," Battenberg said at the 1999 Society of Automotive Engineers International Congress & Exposition in Detroit. "Since 1992, we have increased the non-GM portion of this business by 10 percent per year. We expect to continue to grow at this rate in the coming years." Battenberg said examples of how global automotive customers have chosen Delphi technology include: * Navistar International, MAN and two other major automotive manufacturers awarding Delphi more than $550 million in long-term contracts for supply of modular doors for the European and North American truck markets. * Daewoo awarding Delphi a $35-million contract to provide ABS and Gen III integral wheel spindle bearings. * VW awarding Delphi a $20-million contract for steering wheels and airbags on a 2000MY program. * Jaguar featuring Delphi's Adaptive Cruise Control on a 2000MY program. * The expansion of Delphi's business with DaimlerChrysler for various programs, including the announcement that Delphi's Liquid-Cooled Generator will go into production later this year on a 2000 model yet to be announced. * E-steer -- a Delphi technology showcased at last year's SAE -- will go into production later this year with two European OEMs. * The production of sliding doors for the 1999 Ford Windstar, including the first left-hand power sliding door on the market, and right-hand power sliding doors for the 1999 Toyota Sienna. * The application of Delphi's Power Sliding Door on VW's 1999 Caravelle van in Germany. * The application of Delphi's integral steering gear and new smart advanced dual-zone air controls on DaimlerChrysler's Jeep Grand Cherokee. * And in partnership with Land Rover, Delphi is supplying the hydraulic actuator for the active cornering enhancement on the Discovery model. Battenberg also discussed two new investments aimed at upgrading the technologies Delphi employs in its manufacturing processes. Delphi recently announced a $63 million investment in Kokomo, Ind., and an investment of greater than $60 million in Moraine, Ohio. "In order to serve multiple markets in a cost-effective way, vehicle manufacturers are turning to global platforms -- 'world cars' -- that can be produced and sold in many different markets worldwide," Battenberg said. "With manufacturing sites in every major region of the world, Delphi is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this trend as a way to leverage our global presence," he said. Headquartered in Troy, Mich., USA, Delphi is a world leader in automotive component and systems technology. Delphi's 3 business sectors -- Dynamics and Propulsion; Safety, Thermal and Electrical Architecture; and Electronics and Mobile Communications -- provide comprehensive product solutions to complex customer needs. Delphi has more than 200,000 employees and operates 169 wholly owned manufacturing sites, 40 joint ventures and 27 technical centers in 36 countries. Regional headquarters are located in Paris, Tokyo and Sao Paulo. Delphi can be found on the Internet at http://www.delphiauto.com.
