Delphi Introduces Three New Technologies at SAE 1999
TROY, Mich., March 1 -- Mobile multimedia technologies, an
advanced thermal management system, and "smart" sensors and actuators
highlight Delphi Automotive Systems' product introductions today
at the 1999 Society of Automotive Engineers International Congress &
Exposition in Detroit.
The products, which are under development and will reach the market at
different stages during the next decade, include the Communiport(R) Mobile
MultiMedia System, the Advanced Thermal Management System and INTELLEK(TM)
Smart Sensors and Actuators.
"These products demonstrate Delphi's continued commitment to provide our
customers with the most sophisticated and exciting technologies in the
industry," said J.T. Battenberg III, Delphi chairman, chief executive officer
and president. "They also reflect our ability to design and deliver complex
products with unparalleled quality, value and responsiveness."
    Delphi's newest advanced technologies are:
Communiport(R) Mobile MultiMedia System. Expanding its Mobile MultiMedia
systems solutions to OEMs, Delphi is announcing the addition of the
Communiport portfolio of products. A revolutionary communication and
entertainment system for mobile applications, Delphi Automotive Systems'
Communiport Mobile MultiMedia System increases drive-time productivity and
brings more information, communication and entertainment into vehicles.
Mobile MultiMedia features wireless communication technologies that bring
together computing functions, on-board turn-by-turn navigation and vehicle
audio with hands-free voice activation and text-to-speech response systems.
The Communiport system features a flat panel, reconfigurable color display and
intuitive speech technology that listens and responds to driver commands.
Delphi's Communiport portfolio includes integrated antenna electronics,
wireless communication modules, advanced playbacks, powerful computer
platforms, human-machine interface (HMI) devices and high-speed data buses to
provide seamless on-board communications.
Delphi's Mobile MultiMedia also provides advanced cockpit features and
functions, such as hands-free cellular telephones, television, direct
broadcast satellite reception, digital versatile disc (DVD) and mini-disc
playbacks, global positioning satellite (GPS) navigation, color flat panel
displays (FPD), head-up displays (HUD), and voice recognition and text-to-
speech capability.
Advanced Thermal Management Systems. Delphi's Advanced Thermal Management
System (ATMS), currently under development, is designed to improve energy
efficiency and fuel economy, and enhance occupant comfort.
Delphi's ATMS showcases several innovative approaches to reducing power
consumption and ultimately improving fuel economy, including load reduction
strategies and high-efficiency refrigerant componentry.
Delphi's intelligent comfort control systems can vary the mixture of
outside and recirculated air to provide passengers with adequate fresh air,
while minimizing the power consumed by the air conditioning compressor.
Used by itself, this approach has shown to reduce compressor power
consumption by as much as 60 percent in high ambient conditions.
A significant highlight of Delphi's comprehensive thermal management
system is Delphi's advanced thermal comfort, which provides a complete comfort
experience for drivers under all driving conditions. Components of Delphi's
vision includes comfort sensing, occupant response, advanced system control
and safety.
Comfort sensing goes beyond the traditional monitoring of the temperature
of the air, solar radiation, air flow and humidity sensing. It will detect
local discomfort within a passenger zone and automatically adjust air
temperature and flow to provide adaptive comfort. Occupant response will
enable drivers to adjust cabin climate through voice activation, allowing
drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel and their eyes on the road.
Advanced system control focuses on adaptive learning for the driver's comfort
preferences, while vehicle preconditioning will allow drivers to control cabin
temperature from a remote location.
Intellek(TM) Smart Sensors and Actuators. Delphi Automotive Systems
continues to develop its array of sensor and actuator technologies that
enhance vehicle features and functions. Delphi's Intellek Smart Sensors and
Actuators, designed to analyze vehicle parameters, provide information to
critical vehicle systems, including ride and handling, power and propulsion,
safety, control and communications systems.
Delphi's Intellek Smart Sensors and Actuators are the integration of
sensors and integrated circuits with bus interfaces, providing component
building blocks of an advanced digital control system.
The architecture allows data to be shared by multiple controllers and
actuators, and allows the flexibility to add more features in a plug-and-play
manner without having to redesign the whole system, which saves cost for
vehicle manufacturers.
A featured Intellek product is the Angular Rate Sensor, which measures the
rate of rotation for a vehicle. When placed in three positions at 90-degree
angles to each other, the Angular Rate Sensors can monitor the rate of
rotation of the vehicle on three different planes. This data can support
other advanced Delphi technologies, such as Collision Avoidance Systems. The
path of forward radar beams can be automatically adapted when inert data from
Angular Rate Sensors indicates the vehicle entering a curve. This information
is helpful in avoiding a collision through warning the driver of obstacles in
the vehicle's path, or eventually providing automatic intervention to avoid a
potential collision.
