GM's Rick Wagoner to Speak at the 1999 New York International Automobile Show/International Motor Press Association Breakfast
         Head of World's Largest Company Kicks Off New York Auto Show

    NEW YORK, Feb. 24 -- G. Richard Wagoner, the head of General
Motors' global automotive activities, will be the featured speaker at the New
York International Automobile Show/International Motor Press Association's
(IMPA) breakfast kicking off the 1999 New York Auto Show on Tuesday, March
30th at 7:30 a.m.  In his remarks, Mr. Wagoner will discuss his company's
vision for the next millennium in the context of a rapidly changing global
automotive marketplace.
    Before assuming the role of president and chief operating officer in
October 1998, Mr. Wagoner served as executive vice president of General Motors
and president of GM's North American Operations since 1994.  He has been
executive vice president and chief financial officer of GM since 1992, and has
been responsible for GM's Worldwide Purchasing Group since April 1993.
Mr. Wagoner is also a member of the GM board of directors and chairman of the
GM Automotive Strategy Board.
    A veteran of the international automotive world, Mr. Wagoner served as
president and managing director of General Motors do Brasil (GMB) from 1991 to
1992, and vice president in charge of finance for General Motors Europe from
1989 to 1990.
    Mr. Wagoner earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Duke
University in 1975 and a master's degree in business administration in general
management from Harvard University in 1977.
    Mr. Wagoner began his career at GM as an analyst in the treasurer's office
in New York.  While at the treasurer's office, he held several positions,
including director of Canadian and overseas borrowing and director of capital
analysis and investment.
    Within four years he was named treasurer of General Motors do Brasil in
Sao Paulo, Brazil before becoming executive director of finance for GMB in
1984.  He moved to GM of Canada, Ltd. in 1987 as vice president and finance
manager.  In 1988, he became group director of strategic business planning for
the former Chevrolet-Pontiac-GM of Canada Group.
    Mr. Wagoner serves as chairman of the board of visitors for Duke's Fuqua
School of business, chairman of the Society of Automotive Engineers VISION
2000 executive committee, and on the board of trustees for Detroit Country Day
School.
    The 1999 New York International Auto Show -- North America's last major
auto show of the century -- will be an impressive collection of cutting-edge
design and remarkable innovation.  Four floors of exhibitors are expected to
feature new automotive products, including more than 35 vehicle manufacturers.
Nearly 1,000 cars and trucks will be on display, filling more than
810,000 square feet of exhibit space.  In addition, the 1999 NYIAS expects a
record-breaking number of World, National, and Regional vehicle debuts.
    1999 NYIAS Media Days are March 30, 31, and April 1.  Dealer/Industry
Preview Day is April 2.  The Show opens to the public on Saturday, April 3 and
runs through Sunday, April 11.
