Bourns Introduces Two New MULTIFUSE Battery Protection Models

    SAN JOSE, Calif.--Feb. 23, 1999--

Industry-Leading Polymer PTC Resettable Fuses Facilitate Automation of
Component Placement in High Volume Production Applications

Bourns Inc., a leading manufacturer of passive components, today introduced two new MULTIFUSE(R) Polymer PTC resettable fuse product models for battery applications.
The MF-MSMC190 and the MF-AAA are on display in booth no. 903 at the Portable by Design Conference in the San Jose Convention Center, February 23-25.
Designed to meet the sophisticated needs of today's growing portable equipment market, the MF-MSMC190 surface mount battery protector and the MF-AAA battery protector provide protection from potentially damaging overcurrent conditions caused by short circuits or overcharging, in the battery packs that power products such as digital cellular phones.
Developed using Polymer Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) Fuse technology, these Bourns MULTIFUSE(R) battery protectors are distinguished from other circuit protection devices by their ability to reset automatically.
Designed for ready implementation in high volume production battery applications, the MF-MSMC190 and the MF-AAA are not only instrumental in facilitating automated component placement, but also feature a competitive price and low-profile design.
The Bourns MF-MSMC190 is designed for use in increasingly more complex digital cellular phones that now also incorporate sophisticated electronics, such as power management ICs and charge controllers into their rechargeable Lithium battery packs to monitor cell functions.
Supporting the trend to place all the electronic components onto a PCB or flex-circuit inside the pack, the MF-MSMC190 comes packaged on tape and reel for easy pick and place assembly directly onto the PCB or the internal flex circuit as opposed to being welded on top of the cell.
The MF-MSMC190 also features a low 100 C trip temperature, a high 1.9 amp hold current, 100 amp maximum interrupt current and a 16 volt rating to offer the best combination of safety, size, performance and efficiency.
As Bourns' first model to surface mount within a battery application, the MF-MSMC190 provides manufacturers of digital cell phones with unprecedented design flexibility, while enabling the automation of component placement for very high volume production.
With space at a premium in today's rechargeable battery packs, manufacturers seek to use the largest cells possible to provide the longest talk time on a portable phone or computing time on a laptop computer without adversely affecting the design of the equipment being powered. The MF-AAA meets this challenge by maximizing protection while adding little or no additional size to the battery pack.
With a number of optional features, such as the polymer switching temperature current rating, this product exemplifies Bourns' commitment to offering greater design choice through customization. The MF-AAA also facilitates automated component placement, enabling low-cost, high volume production of Lithium batteries used in digital cellular phones.

    Price and Availability

The Bourns MULTIFUSE MF-MSMC190 Polymer PTC resettable fuse is available immediately and priced from US$0.20-US$0.25, depending upon volume. Bourns offers the MF-AAA as a custom solution designed to meet individual application needs.
