Toyota Subsidiary Places Order for SMS CT System

Toyota Subsidiary Places Order for SMS CT System; Bodine Aluminum to Become Toyota's Second SmartScan(TM) System Installation
AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 22 -- Scientific Measurement Systems
(OTC Bulletin Board: SCMS) (SMS) announced today that Bodine Aluminum, Inc.,
a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor based in Missouri,
has placed an order for an SMS SmartScan CT system. The order is for a system
similar to the scanner delivered by SMS to Toyota's Foundry Engineering
Division (FED) in Japan, and will inspect aluminum cylinder heads and engine
blocks. The system will be installed in Bodine's manufacturing production
facilities in Troy, Missouri.
"The fact that Bodine Aluminum is an impressive production facility and
not an R&D center is representative of the types of applications we are
pursuing as we try to migrate CT closer to the factory shop floor," stated
Matt Gutierrez, SMS' Vice-President of Sales and Marketing.
Mr. Gutierrez noted that evaluations conducted by Bodine on the SMS system
at FED in Japan were instrumental in Bodine's selection of SMS as their CT
vendor. "For a customer as sophisticated as Toyota, with extensive experience
in inspection and CT, being able to look at images of their own parts on a
representative system was obviously important in their decision-making
process. We consider all of our most recent awards from commercial customers
to be strategic opportunities for 'repeat' business such as this."
Automotive castings such as cylinder heads and engine blocks continue to
be one of the primary applications for SMS' CT systems and service work, Mr.
Gutierrez said. Automotive companies use CT data to perform visual inspection
in parts for cracks and voids, as well as measurement of critical dimensions.
Increasingly, the ability to compare the dimensions of the design model to the
actual part, and for some companies reverse engineering, are becoming more
common uses for CT data as well.
SMS designs, manufactures, and sells industrial CT equipment and services
to a worldwide customer base. The company is a recognized leader in the
development and commercialization of CT technology. CT provides a fully
non-destructive method for creating 2-D and 3-D data sets of an object,
allowing the user to examine both internal and external features. SMS is a
public company traded on the OTC Bulletin Board under the symbol SCMS. SMS is
based in Austin, Texas, and can be reached at 512-837-4712 or at
