Cherry Semiconductor's CS-1107 Provides Full Relay Control

Cherry Semiconductor's New CS-1107 Single Relay Driver IC Provides Full Automotive Relay Control

    EAST GREENWICH, R.I.--Feb. 22, 1999--

This application-specific standard product (ASSP) IC powers an
automobile relay in addition to detecting various fault conditions

The CS-1107 Automotive Single Relay Driver, an ASSP from Cherry Semiconductor Corporation, is designed expressly to power and detect fault conditions in an automobile relay. The low-cost, feature rich CS-1107 provides up to 350 mA of drive current and performs a number of detection and protection functions to ensure safe, proper operation of relays in automotive systems.
On-chip diagnostics detect both open-circuit and short-circuit conditions of the relay and report the occurrence on the device's fault pin, an active low open collector output which is usually fed to the automotive system's microprocessor. In addition, the CS-1107 contains an internal zener diode to protect itself from relay flyback pulses. An on-chip overtemperature shutdown circuit provides protection should the relay fail.
The CS-1107 has a TTL compatible control input that turns the output on when the control input is high (logic 1). If the control pin is open, internal pull-down circuitry ensures that the output will turn off, thus disabling the relay. In the on-mode, the CS-1107 draws a quiescent current of 6 mA maximum. In the off-mode, current draw is just 250 microamps maximum. The device is powered by a single 5V (nominal) supply voltage.
The CS-1107 is offered as a standard product, housed in an 8-lead small outline (SOIC) narrow plastic package with internally fused leads. It is specified for an operating temperature range of -40(degree)C to +85(degree)C.
In quantities of 1000 pieces, the CS-1107 is priced at $0.99 each.
