Motorola Sandpoint Evaluation Platform Speeds Development of PowerPC Systems; Ideal Platform for Hardware, Software Development and Evaluation of MPC8240 Integrated PowerPC Processor

AUSTIN, Texas--Feb. 22, 1999--Motorola today introduced the Sandpoint Evaluation Platform to help system developers get their MPC8240(TM) Integrated PowerPC(TM) Processor systems to market faster.
This new evaluation module can cut months off a new product design by demonstrating the capabilities of the MPC8240 Integrated Processor and provides an ideal platform for hardware and software development.
The Sandpoint Evaluation Platform motherboard is an ATX form factor with a PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC) connector for the MPC8240 Integrated Processor-based PMC module installed with 32 MB of SDRAM. The Sandpoint comes in an ATX mini-tower case and includes a DINK32 debug monitor that is provided in ROM.
Sandpoint supports up to four PCI slot-based devices that can run at 33 MHz or 66 MHz. Two of these PCI slots are 5 volts and 32 bit. The other two PCI slots are 3.3 volts and 64 bit. The super I/O chip provides two standard 16650 compatible serial ports, an IEEE 1284 parallel port, a floppy disk port, two IDE ports, and PS/2 mouse and keyboard connectors.
The Sandpoint's processing power is provided by the MPC8240 Integrated PowerPC Processor. The highly integrated MPC8240 combines onto a single chip a full-featured 32-bit superscalar PowerPC 603e(TM) core processor, an advanced-memory controller and a 32-bit PCI interface. The MPC8240 was designed for systems where low cost, small space, low power consumption and high performance are critical requirements.
The Sandpoint Evaluation Platform with an MPC8240 Integrated PowerPC Processor running at speeds up to 266 MHz is available now, and can be ordered by part number PPCEVAL-SP2-8240 at a suggested list price of $2,415 each in single unit quantities.
As the world's No. 1 producer of embedded processors, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector offers multiple DigitalDNA(TM) solutions which enable its customers in the consumer, networking and computing, transportation, and wireless communications markets, to create new business opportunities. Motorola's worldwide semiconductor sales were $7.3 billion in l998.
Motorola is a global leader in advanced electronic systems and services. It liberates the power of technology by creating software-enhanced products that provide integrated customer solutions and Internet access via wireless and satellite communications, as well as computing, networking and automotive electronics.
Motorola also provides essential digital building blocks in the form of embedded semiconductors, controls and systems. Global sales in 1998 were $29.4 billion.
