Land Rover's Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) Wins Award

Land Rover's Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) Wins the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada's '1999 Best New Technology Award'
TORONTO, Feb. 19 -- In a ceremony at the Canadian
International Auto Show, Land Rover's new Active Cornering Enhancement system
(ACE) was awarded the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada's "1999
Best New Technology Award." ACE, a world first for volume-production
sport-utility vehicles, is available on the all-new 1999 Land Rover Discovery
Series II. The system improves both performance and comfort, helping make the
authentic new Land Rover a vehicle that can truly go anywhere and do anything.
"The new Discovery Series II is a technological tour de force," said
Pascal Mismaque, Managing Director of Land Rover Canada. "With ACE, body lean
during cornering is virtually eliminated, making Discovery one of the best
handling and most comfortable sport-utility vehicles available. You really
have to drive it to believe it."
Using two sensors, ACE measures the vehicle's lateral acceleration during
cornering and steering maneuvers and utilizes a hydraulic system to counter
the vehicle's natural tendency to lean. Two piston/lever configurations (roll
modules) replace conventional front and rear anti-roll bars. With the ability
to build enough pressure to counteract up to 1.0 g lateral acceleration in 250
milliseconds, the fully automatic system virtually eliminates movement of the
vehicle's body (lean) up to an acceleration of 0.4 g laterally. ACE then
allows a progressively higher amount of body movement as lateral acceleration
increases.
The benefit to the driver is that the vehicle feels more stable and
responsive under cornering conditions or emergency maneuvers. The reduction
of body movement also provides a greater sense of the vehicle's ride and
handling predictability and enhances both passenger comfort and driver
confidence.
This is the second major award for Land Rover's ACE system. In November
1998, ACE received a Popular Science "Best of What's New" award.
