DaimlerChrysler Honors Educators During National Engineers WeekAUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 18 -- DaimlerChrysler Senior Vice President of Engineering Technologies Bernard Robertson will honor 20 Michigan educators with a Contribution to Engineering Award during National Engineers Week (NEW). The awards are for the educators' contributions in guiding students toward a career in engineering. They will be presented at a special luncheon on February 26 at the DaimlerChrysler Technical Center in Auburn Hills. DaimlerChrysler is a national sponsor of NEW. "Industry and society face growing technical and environmental challenges that will need to be met by qualified engineers," said Robertson, Michigan Chairperson of National Engineers Week. "The more students who can experience the excitement of engineering, the more who may choose that career path and ultimately apply their skills to our common challenges." For DaimlerChrysler, those challenges are daunting. Although it is a world leader in vehicle safety, efficiency, emission control, manufacturing, product quality and design, the company continues to strive to improve its products. "Highly educated and motivated engineers are vital to our technological leadership. We depend on them to sustain our future," Robertson said. The near future will yield vehicles powered by alternate fuels that rely increasingly on sophisticated electronic control, and are more efficiently manufactured. All of these major impending changes require a massive input of technical skill. National Engineer's Week is designed to give students an early sense of the challenges, benefits, and fun of engineering. Throughout the week, corporate sponsors around the nation will invite students into their engineering facilities to see product development in action. DaimlerChrysler will be hosting students from 14 metropolitan Detroit schools at four different facilities, including the DaimlerChrysler Technical Center in Auburn Hills, the Sterling Stamping plant in Sterling Heights, and the Plymouth Road Office Complex and Mack Avenue engine plant, both in Detroit.
