Ford Division Names New General Marketing ManagerDEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 18 -- George E. Murphy has been named General Marketing Manager for Ford Division, the highest volume sales and marketing division in the automotive industry. His responsibilities will include development and implementation of marketing strategies and programs for all Ford brand cars, trucks, sport utilities and minivans sold in the United States. Murphy joins Ford Motor Company March 1, from his present position as vice president, worldwide product management, GE Lighting, Cleveland, Ohio. "We welcome George Murphy's broad, global experience in consumer products," said Ford Division President Jim O'Connor, who made the announcement. "George has outstanding credentials and a proven track record that will serve him well as he accepts this challenge to keep the tremendous momentum going at Ford Division, which had an all-time record year in 1998." Murphy began his career with General Electric in 1988. His marketing and operational experience includes several overseas assignments. He served as managing director of GE Lighting's Asia Pacific operations, based in Singapore, from 1991-1994. He was then named a corporate officer of General Electric and vice president, marketing and product management for GE Lighting Europe, based in London. In 1997, he returned to the U.S., when he was named vice president of worldwide product management for GE Lighting. Prior to joining General Electric, Murphy worked in account management and as a key aide to the senior vice president for USA operations for the Coca-Cola Company, and for Booz Allen & Hamilton, where his consulting experience included strategy formulation for clients in industrial and consumer products. "Helping the Ford Division and Ford Motor Company and Ford dealers accelerate their record push to further develop the branded franchise for their vehicles is an exciting and unique opportunity," said Murphy. A 1977 graduate of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina with a BS in Civil Engineering, Murphy also holds two graduate degrees. He earned an MS in Offshore Engineering from Duke in 1979 and received his MBA in Industry Administration from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1983. Murphy succeeds Darryl B. Hazel, who today was named executive director of Ford Customer Service Division for North America. Details of Hazel's announcement are the subject of a separate news release.
