Ford Division Names New General Marketing Manager
DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 18 -- George E. Murphy has been named
General Marketing Manager for Ford Division, the highest volume sales and
marketing division in the automotive industry. His responsibilities will
include development and implementation of marketing strategies and programs
for all Ford brand cars, trucks, sport utilities and minivans sold in the
United States.
Murphy joins Ford Motor Company March 1, from his present
position as vice president, worldwide product management, GE Lighting,
Cleveland, Ohio.
"We welcome George Murphy's broad, global experience in consumer
products," said Ford Division President Jim O'Connor, who made the
announcement. "George has outstanding credentials and a proven track record
that will serve him well as he accepts this challenge to keep the tremendous
momentum going at Ford Division, which had an all-time record year in 1998."
Murphy began his career with General Electric in 1988. His marketing and
operational experience includes several overseas assignments. He served as
managing director of GE Lighting's Asia Pacific operations, based in
Singapore, from 1991-1994. He was then named a corporate officer of General
Electric and vice president, marketing and product management for GE Lighting
Europe, based in London. In 1997, he returned to the U.S., when he was named
vice president of worldwide product management for GE Lighting.
Prior to joining General Electric, Murphy worked in account management and
as a key aide to the senior vice president for USA operations for the
Coca-Cola Company, and for Booz Allen & Hamilton, where his consulting
experience included strategy formulation for clients in industrial and
consumer products.
"Helping the Ford Division and Ford Motor Company and Ford dealers
accelerate their record push to further develop the branded franchise for
their vehicles is an exciting and unique opportunity," said Murphy.
A 1977 graduate of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina with a BS in
Civil Engineering, Murphy also holds two graduate degrees. He earned an MS in
Offshore Engineering from Duke in 1979 and received his MBA in Industry
Administration from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1983.
Murphy succeeds Darryl B. Hazel, who today was named executive director of
Ford Customer Service Division for North America. Details of Hazel's
announcement are the subject of a separate news release.
