Trak Auto Corporation Announces Sales
LANDOVER, Md., Feb. 16 -- Trak Auto Corporation ("Trak Auto")
, announced that sales for the 52 weeks and 13 weeks ended
January 30, 1999 decreased 30.9% and 16.0% to $220,726,000 and $51,767,000,
respectively, compared to sales of $319,440,000 and $61,640,000 for the 52
weeks and 13 weeks ended January 31, 1998, respectively. The decreases were
primarily due to the sale of its California operations in December 1997 (82
stores) and closure of its 15 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania stores on January 31,
1998. Comparable sales (stores open more than one year) increased 3.6% for the
13 weeks ended January 30, 1999 compared to the 13 weeks ended January 31,
1998. Comparable sales for the 13 weeks increased due to colder weather
resulting in higher sales of batteries and winter goods. Comparable sales for
the 52 weeks ended January 30, 1999 decreased 2.2% compared to the 52 weeks
ended January 31, 1998. The decrease in comparable sales was primarily due to
an increase in competition in the markets in which the Company operates
combined with unusually mild weather conditions in the first quarter. Sales
for Super Trak and Super Trak Warehouse stores represented 73.6% and 74.2% of
total sales during the 52 weeks and 13 weeks ended January 30, 1999,
respectively, compared to 69.8% and 71.9% for the 52 weeks and 13 weeks ended
January 31, 1998, respectively.
Trak Auto currently operates 175 stores, including 91 Super Trak stores
and 26 Super Trak Warehouse stores in the Washington, D.C.; Richmond,
Virginia; central Pennsylvania; Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin
markets compared with 277 stores including 128 Super Trak stores and 45 Super
Trak Warehouse stores in operation during fiscal 1998.
