UAW-GM Child Development Center Wins National AwardSAN DIEGO, Feb. 4 -- The UAW-GM Child Development Center, a joint labor-management project between the UAW International Union and General Motors Corporation in Flint, MI, will be honored today in a national competition for innovative programs that help people balance work/life issues. The fourth annual Innovative Excellence Awards will be presented by the Alliance of Work/Life Professionals (AWLP) at their annual conference at the Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado, CA. The AWLP established the award program in 1995 as a way of recognizing excellence and innovation in both public and private work-family programs. Recognized for its unique partnership and community outreach efforts, the UAW-GM Child Development Center is a 24-hour child care center serving the needs of UAW-represented General Motors employees, offering programming for 265 preschool and school age children, including a summer camp. The program also reaches out to the community to raise the quality of care in the city with training programs open to local child care providers. In addition, a mentor program in partnership with the University of Michigan pairs new teachers with more experienced ones. Also winning the Innovative Excellence Award from the AWLP were: the Colorado Bright Beginnings' Parent Friendly Workplace Initiative and the PBS television show, "Working Family Values." The Alliance of Work/Life Professionals is the largest professional organization in the work/life field. The Alliance supports individuals, organizations and communities in order to promote work/family and personal life balance.
