American Honda Kicks Off 1999 By Setting All-Time January Sales Records
TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 2 -- American Honda ended the first
month of 1999 the same way the company closed 1998 -- at a record selling
pace. Total January vehicle sales for the company ended the month at 72,220
units, up 17.1 percent over the previous record for the month of 64,130, set
in 1998. Gains in light trucks contributed to the record month for Honda
Division, with records set by Odyssey and CR-V models, while the Acura 3.2TL
set a new monthly record and added to Acura's increase over last January.
Odyssey sales of 2,877 marked an increase of 253.7 percent over January
1998, and set a new record for the month. Honda CR-V sales of 9,750 units
posted a gain of 116.8 percent over the previous January record of 4,678
units, set last year. Total Honda Division sales were up 15.9 percent over
January 1998 to 64,643, also a new record.
Led by the popular new 3.2TL, Acura Division posted a 28.8 percent sales
increase over last January, selling 7,577 vehicles. Having set new sales
records every month since its introduction, the Acura 3.2TL totaled 3,341 for
January, an increase of 143.5 percent over the same month in 1998.
