3 February 1999
American Red Cross Reports on Blood Needs of Injured Ford Rouge Powerplant WorkersDETROIT, Feb. 2 -- The American Red Cross strives to keep an adequate supply of blood on hand to meet the daily and emergency needs of our community. Currently, we are supplying local hospitals with all of the blood and blood products needed to treat the workers injured in the Ford Rouge accident. The ongoing treatment of the injuries sustained by the workers will require plasma, platelets and red blood cells. Individuals are encouraged to call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE, to schedule an appointment to donate at a Red Cross blood drive or donor center in their community. "We will need an extra 90-100 donors per day during the next three weeks, just to provide the blood products needed by the injured workers," said Mary Anne Stella, Chief Operating Officer, Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region. "The Red Cross is encouraging eligible individuals to schedule donation appointments to help replenish the supply of blood and blood products, which will be used during the long-term treatment of the injured workers." To schedule an appointment to donate, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE.
