Record January U.S. Sales for DaimlerChrysler
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 2 -- DaimlerChrysler
had record sales of 208,032 units in the U.S. in January. Dodge, Jeep(R),
Chrysler and Plymouth brand vehicles represented 195,807 of those units, a
19 percent increase for those brands over the previous year and the fourth
consecutive month in which they have set a monthly record. Mercedes-Benz USA
posted sales of 12,225, versus 11,720 units for the same period last year.
Seventeen sales records in all were set in January for the Dodge, Jeep,
Chrysler and Plymouth brands, including new high marks for Jeep vehicles, the
Dodge division, Dodge Ram Pickup, Dodge Durango, Chrysler Concorde and the
Plymouth Breeze.
"After having our best year ever in 1998, we knew we had to come out of
the starting blocks smoking in 1999, and that's exactly what we've done," said
James P. Holden, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "The 1999
Jeep Grand Cherokee, now at full strength in dealerships across the country,
is obviously a runaway hit. But all of our lines -- from Dodge trucks to
Chrysler sedans to minivans -- are showing strength. Mercedes-Benz also had
record sales of passenger cars in the U.S., so DaimlerChrysler is continuing
the great momentum it established in 1998."
Passenger car sales for the Dodge, Chrysler and Plymouth brands in the
U.S. were 56,176 in January, up 18 percent from last January's 49,415. Truck
sales were 139,631, a 19 percent rise over the 122,140 units sold in January
1998, and the fifth consecutive month in which trucks have set a record.
Sport utility vehicle sales were 55,171, a 36 percent jump versus January
1998, when 42,186 SUVs were sold. Minivan sales were also on the rise,
totaling 39,226, a three percent increase over last January.
Also among those setting January sales records were Dodge trucks, with
sales of 82,699, a 19 percent increase over last January's sales of 72,521;
Jeep Grand Cherokee, which sold 22,496 units, a 29 percent jump over the same
period last year. Dodge Ram pickup also had a new January high mark, with
29,897, an 18 percent over last year; Dodge Durango sold 14,782 units, a
60 percent increase compared to last year; Dodge Intrepid sales totaled
12,456, representing a 79 percent increase over January 1998's 7,227; and
Dodge Dakota sold 10,914 units, an eight percent increase over January 1998's
record of 10,492.
