Toyota Reports Strong January Sales
    TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 2 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.
Inc., today reported strong January sales of 94,414, up 27.2 percent over the
same period last year.
    "The strong market conditions that fueled near-record industry sales in
the final quarter of 1998, should carryover well into 1999," said Yale Gieszl,
TMS executive vice president.  "High consumer confidence and affordable
interest rates will play a big part in how long the industry can maintain its
momentum."
    The Toyota Division posted strong January sales of 83,035, a 24.9 percent
increase over last year.  The Lexus Division reported its best-ever January
sales month  with 11,379 units sold, up 46.8 percent.
    Toyota passenger cars were led by Camry, the best-selling car in America
for two consecutive years, which began defense of its sales crown with 30,074
units sold, up 67.3 percent over last year.  Corolla also posted strong
numbers, tallying 17,144 sales, an increase of 8.7 percent over the same
period last year.
    Toyota Division light trucks also enjoyed a successful month with sales
reaching 31,135, an increase of 13.9 percent.  Toyota sport utility vehicle
(SUV) sales were led by 4Runner with sales of 8,637, up 12.3 percent over the
same period last year while Land Cruiser sales totaled 1,372, up 233.4
percent.  The popular Sienna minivan continued its sales roll with sales of
5,612, representing an increase of 29.8 percent.  Toyota compact pickup trucks
also enjoyed a strong month with sales of 11,136, up 13.7 percent.
    The Lexus Division's record setting month was led by their hot-selling
SUVs.  The RX 300 reported sales of 3,970 units while the LX 470 recorded a
best-ever January with sales of 1,056, an increase of 785.7 percent.  On the
passenger car side, the GS 300 posted an increase of 53.1%, with 1,494 units
sold.
    Sales of North American-built vehicles made up 60.8 percent of total
January sales.
