PPG Receives CIO Award for `IT' Application in Forming BusinessTUCSON, Ariz., Feb. 2 -- CIO magazine tonight presents an Enterprise Value Award to PPG Industries for creating business value with information technology in successfully launching its insurance claims processing subsidiary, LYNX Services From PPG. PPG's award will be accepted at the Westin La Paloma Hotel by David W. Smith, vice president, information technology, and Garry A. Goudy, vice president, automotive replacement glass. The award, established in 1993 and sponsored by AT&T Corp.'s AT&T Solutions subsidiary, recognizes innovative collaboration of information technology and business management. CIO Editor-in-Chief Abbie Lundberg said award recipients realize a return on technology investment and "prove that the right technology can add value to many aspects of the business -- customer service, response time and even entrance to new markets." Smith said PPG founded LYNX Services From PPG in 1994 to enhance its, and its customers', capability to deliver superior value to insurance companies and consumers by streamlining automotive glass claims management. A consumer resolves a glass replacement or repair claim with a single, brief telephone call, during which a LYNX Services representative verifies coverage, arranges service at a time and shop chosen by the consumer, and completes the claim process. The PPG unit also audits and processes the invoice for consolidated electronic billing to the insurer. LYNX Services, which has 600 employees, is the nation's leading auto glass claims processor. It operates claims management centers in Overland Park, Kan., and Fort Myers, Fla.; a third center is under construction in Paducah, Ky. "We succeed by keeping three customers happy -- the insurer, the glass installer, and the policyholder who is the ultimate customer," PPG's Goudy said. "Our combined systems and operational expertise makes LYNX Services work, and we are expanding into other areas of claims management." A panel of judges selected Pittsburgh-based PPG and four other companies for Enterprise Value Awards after editors, consultants and academics reviewed all nominations and visited nominated companies to assemble detailed reports on technology application and business success for the judges' evaluation. Also receiving 1999 awards are Capital One Financial Corp., The MITRE Corp., SBC Communications and the SABRE Group.
