Cellular Telephone Pioneer Honored by SAEWARRENDALE, Pa., Feb. 2 -- The Society of Automotive Engineers will honor T. Russell Shields, chairman, Navigation Technologies Inc., Sunnyvale, California, with its SAE/Delco Intelligent Transportation Systems Award. SAE President-elect Donald W. Ableson will present Shields with the award at a special convocation at the 1999 SAE International Congress & Exposition in Cobo Hall, Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday, March 2, 1999. The award recognizes individuals whose outstanding technical accomplishment is judged to have significantly advanced the state of the art in Intelligent Transportation Systems. Since the mid 1980s, Shields has taken a leadership role in the conception and development of Intelligent Transportation Systems. Shields has dedicated his efforts and the resources of his company toward promoting the rapid and successful deployment of ITS, including significant work on standards, safety and telecommunications. Beginning in the early 1980s, Shields was a pioneer in the creation and expansion of the cellular telephone industry. He was a founder of Cellular Business Systems, the single most successful cellular services organization of the decade. Shields also participated in the founding of the Cellular Telephone Industry Association (CTIA) and establishing it as a major force in cellular telephony. The SAE Congress is the world's largest showcase of automotive engineering technologies. The event, which runs March 1-4, features more than 1,100 exhibiting companies, including 90 percent of the world's top 25 suppliers.
