Volkswagen Reports January Sales Up 45.2 Percent - Best in 13 Years - Record January Sales for Passat Model

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 2 -- Volkswagen of America, Inc.
reported its best January sales results since 1986.
    For the month, Volkswagen sold 16,149 new cars, which represents a 45.2
percent increase over last year's January figure of 11,119.
    Volkswagen's hot-selling Passat, coming off its best sales year ever in
1998, enjoyed record January sales of 3,195, versus last year's mark of 2,563,
an increase of 24.7 percent.
    Last month, Volkswagen reported its best annual sales results in the U.S.
in 17 years, with 219,679 sold in 1998, a figure that maintains its status as
the number-one selling European importer.
