Two Roadway Drivers From Meridian Recognized for 4,000,000 Miles of Safe Driving

    AKRON, Ohio--Feb. 1, 1999--Two professional drivers from the Roadway Express facility in Meridian, Miss., are being honored for individually driving at least 4,000,000 miles -- the equivalent of 160 times around the Earth's equator -- without a preventable accident. A barbecue recognizing Alvin Wilkinson and Glen Phillips will take place on Feb. 18 at the Meridian Linehaul Relay Station. Roadway President and Chief Operating Officer Jim Staley will present each of the drivers with a plaque and a custom leather jacket personalized with the employee's name and safety accomplishment.

    Wilkinson began his career with Roadway in 1964 as a city driver working out of the Columbus, Ga. facility. He has been a road driver for the past 33 years, first based at Roadway's Atlanta facility, then Nashville, and, currently, the Meridian facility since 1973. Wilkinson and his wife of 38 years, Martha Ann, reside in Meridian and have two daughters.
    Phillips, a resident of Pearl, has been a road driver for Roadway's Meridian facility for more than 30 years. He and Diane, his wife of 41 years, have two daughters and two grandchildren.
