Detroit Diesel Completes 500th Series 2000(TM) Marine Engine
DETROIT, Jan. 20 -- Detroit Diesel Corporation
announced today the completion of its 500th DDC/MTU Series 2000 engine. This
16-cylinder, 1800 horsepower marine engine was built as one of a pair
specifically for New Jersey-based Viking Yachts, builders of premium
convertibles and motoryachts from 43 to 72 feet. These 16V2000 engines will
power Viking's all-new 65 foot convertible which is scheduled for delivery in
late spring.
Built in Redford, Michigan, the DDC/MTU Series 2000 engine stakes a claim
among the world's finest yacht builders as the new choice for marine power.
The 500th (and 501st) 16V2000's will be delivered to Viking Yachts' customer
by DDC distributor Johnson & Towers, Inc. of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. This
pair of Series 2000 marine engines represents the continuation of a
relationship between DDC, Viking Yachts and Johnson & Towers that spans over
30 years. Bill Healey, Viking's co-owner and President said, "Based on our
long experience with DDC, we know these are exceptional engines -- high power-
to-weight, durable, dependable -- with an outstanding service and parts
support network standing behind every one of our DDC-powered yachts. We are
very pleased to offer these engines as standard equipment in our larger
convertibles."
The Viking 65-foot convertible has a beam of 18' 9", a fuel capacity of
2,000 gallons, and an anticipated full-load displacement of 98,000 pounds.
Ordered by Viking dealer HMY New Yacht Sales of Florida and South Carolina,
company Vice President and co-owner Steve Moynihan said, "We selected the
DDC/MTU 16V2000 for this Viking 65 convertible because we wanted reliability
and the highest possible cruising speed along with DDC's outstanding
reputation for service. This makes the DDC/MTU Series 2000 engine the obvious
choice for a yacht of this class and caliber."
The DDC/MTU Series 2000 is a complete family of high-performance,
four-cycle marine diesel engines available in 8V, 12V and 16V configurations,
producing pleasure craft ratings of 900, 1,350 and 1,800 horsepower.
Engineered to set new industry benchmarks for performance, reliability and
durability, the DDC/MTU Series 2000 features the latest in electronically
controlled fuel injection and turbocharging for maximum power, minimal smoke
and rapid throttle response at all speeds. A unique combination of sequential
turbocharging and wastegate technology produces unusually rapid acceleration
to planing speed. The engine's triple-wall exhaust manifolds retain maximum
heat for optimal turbocharger performance while greatly reducing outer surface
temperatures for a pleasant engine room environment.
The engine series is a result of a joint development program between
Detroit Diesel and MTU Motoren- und Turbinen-Union Friedrichshafen GmbH.
Named after its two-liter-per-cylinder displacement, other features include a
unit pump injection system for greater economy and cleaner fuel burn, DDC's
proven DDEC controls, split-circuit cooling for low smoke in cold conditions,
and a modular, titanium heat exchanger for long life and easy service.
