Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Post Record Sales in 1998

    TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 19 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS),
U.S.A., Inc., reported today that 1998 sales of its Toyota Certified Used
Vehicles totaled a record 87,659 units, an increase of 6.8 percent over the
same period a year ago.  Sales for the month of December were 12.0 percent
higher than 1997 figures of 7,189 units.
     "We set a new annual Certified Used Vehicle sales record well before the
close of year-end," said Guillermo Hysaw, TMS corporate manager, used vehicle
department.  "1999 will be a challenge due to increased competition in the
used vehicle market, but we strongly feel that this will be a banner year, one
which will position us well into the next millennium."
    The Toyota Used Vehicle program, established in 1996, provides the best
pre-owned warranty in the industry.  The warranty, from date of first use,
includes six-year, 100,000-mile powertrain coverage, as well as an optional
comprehensive 100,000-mile vehicle service agreement.  And, 24-hour roadside
assistance also is provided free of charge for one year.  "We truly believe
that the best new cars make the best used cars," added Hysaw.
    All 1995-1999 Toyota models with less than 55,000 miles are eligible for
the program.  Prior to sale, each vehicle receives a rigorous 128-point
inspection of all mechanical and safety functions, as well as overall
appearance considerations.
