As Midwest Braces for More Snowfall, Consumers' Concerns Turn to CarsDETROIT, Jan. 14 -- Just as Midwesterners are beginning to recover from the most significant snowfall of the season, another blast looms on the horizon. Accumulations of 3-8" of snowfall are predicted this weekend, stretching from southern Wisconsin to New England. In the midst of traffic tie-ups and unplowed pavement, motorists are facing yet another significant headache ... the devastating effect of winter's elements on the interior and exterior of their cars and trucks. According to Tom Walker, director of the Ziebart Forum on Car Care Solutions, snow, salt, slush and grime contribute to millions of dollars of vehicle damage per year. Walker says that there are a number of easy ways that vehicle owners can repair winter damage at home, as well as preventative measures they can take to preserve the life of their cars and trucks. * Wash vehicles on a regular basis Slush and salt can be easily trapped in the undercarriage and creases of cars and trucks, and over time can cause rust and deterioration. It is important that motorists wash their vehicles as much as possible to remove these corrosive elements. Use fresh water for each wash. Be certain that the undercarriage is thoroughly cleaned and rinsed. * Purchase "sacrificial" floor mats Purchase inexpensive, "sacrificial" floor mats to absorb corrosive substances. This will save custom mats from incurring permanent damage, and will also help to preserve and protect the carpet beneath the mats. * Replace windshield wipers Windshield wipers can mean the difference between life and death on winter roads. Typical wipers have a life expectancy of about one year, so be certain to replace yours if they are damaged or no longer fully effective. Keep wipers clean and free from ice and snow. * Apply a water repellant to all glass surfaces Water repellant will help heavy wet rain, sleet, snow and ice to bead up and roll off the windshield, which will increase visibility in poor driving conditions.
