DaimlerChrysler International Reports International Sales, Record Year in Nine CountriesAUBURN HILLS, Mich., Jan. 7 -- DaimlerChrysler reported sales outside North America for its Dodge, Jeep(R) and Chrysler brands for the month of December were 19,075, contributing to a 1998 calendar year total of 200,222, down 16 percent from 1997, which was a record year internationally for those brands. Annual sales records were set, however, in nine major markets outside North America, including Germany, Spain, The Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Argentina, and Brazil. Sales in the region of Latin America were also at an all-time high at 49,461 for the year. December was a record month for the Chrysler and Jeep brands in Europe, where 10,250 sales were recorded, including best-ever months in Germany and Sweden. The Dodge Dakota, Dodge Ram Pickup and the Chrysler Sebring Convertible all had record sales in 1998 outside of North America. Chrysler minivans were the company's biggest seller outside of North America, accounting for 29.9 percent of international sales. The Jeep Cherokee accounted for 20.1 percent of sales; the Jeep Grand Cherokee for 18.2 percent of the company's international results. "Even though the Asian financial crisis and the resulting fallout worldwide, including Latin America, impinged on our growth outside North America in 1998, we finished the year with a strong month," said Theodor R. Cunningham, Executive Vice President, International and Latin America and General Manager Chrysler Truck Operations. "Going forward, we expect synergies from the merger, improved availability of the Chrysler 300M and this spring's overseas launch of both the award-winning Grand Cherokee and the Neon to make for a brighter sales picture internationally." Germany was the largest market for the Chrysler and Jeep brands outside North America in 1998, reporting sales of 21,340, followed by Venezuela (20,050), the United Kingdom (17,701), Spain (16,735), and Brazil (11,225). Europe remains the company's largest region, totaling 105,255 units for the year, down 1 percent from last year's 105,918. Latin America followed with 49,461, up 4 percent over last year, Asia/Pacific with 32,431, down 50 percent last year and Middle East/Africa, with 13,075 in unit sales last year, down 29 percent from 1997.
