Federal-Mogul Strengthens Power Cylinder Offering in Europe with Planned Acquisition of Piston Operations from Alcan Aluminium Limited

    SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Jan. 7 -- Federal-Mogul Corporation
announced today that it has agreed to acquire the piston division
of Alcan Deutschland GmbH in Germany, a subsidiary of Alcan Aluminium Limited
in Canada.  Alcan's piston division manufactures high quality pistons for
passenger cars and commercial vehicles under the highly regarded Nural brand
name.
    "Alcan's piston division is a significant supplier to the original
equipment manufacturers in Germany and their strong position in diesel pistons
enhances Federal-Mogul's power cylinder product offering," said Alan Johnson,
executive vice president, Powertrain.  "Adding their high quality pistons to
our existing powertrain product offering is a clear win for our European
customers.  Providing power cylinder assemblies to our customers is a global
priority and will continue to keep Federal-Mogul at the forefront of value-
added customer offerings."
    Alcan's piston division employs approximately 1,100 people at its
manufacturing facility in Nuremberg, Germany with annual sales in excess of
$150 million.

    Terms of the planned acquisition were not disclosed.  The transaction is
subject to approval by regulatory authorities and should be completed late in
the first quarter.
