Nissan North America Announces the Addition of Minority Nissan and Infiniti Dealers
DETROIT, Jan. 7 -- Nissan North America, Inc. announced today
the addition of five minority dealers to its nationwide retail body.
The new Nissan and Infiniti dealers were introduced by Minoru Nakamura,
President, Nissan North America, Inc., during a luncheon at the Detroit Auto
Show honoring Ed Davis, the first African-American to own an automobile
dealership in the country.
The new Nissan dealer principals include T.J. Johnson, owner of Tidewater
Nissan in Newport News, Virginia and Raphael Martinez, owners of Town and
Country Nissan in Vancouver, Washington. The Infiniti Division has issued
non-operating letters of commitment to Fernando Somoza, for the North Houston,
TX open point; and to its first African American dealers, Ellenae
Henry-Fairhurst, an open point in Huntsville, Alabama and Anthony March, an
open point in Daytona Beach, Florida.
"We made a commitment in June to increase our minority dealer
representation in the United States by 25 % by the year 2002," said Mike
Seergy, Vice President and General Manager of the Nissan Division. "Our
overriding concern has been for sustainable minority dealer success and
self-sufficiency, and these dealers were looking for the same approach. We
are very serious about meeting this goal and we are very encouraged by our
progress thus far."
Increasing minority representation is just one step in a multi-pronged
diversity program Nissan has instituted throughout the company.
We have become much more pro-active and knowledgeable in our outreach to
minority dealer candidates for Infiniti and this has yielded terrific
results," says Tom Orbe, Vice President and General Manager of the Infiniti
Division. "We are looking forward to building more of these mutually
beneficial relationships."
In North America, Nissan's operations include styling, engineering,
manufacturing, sales, consumer and corporate finance, and industrial textile
equipment. Nissan in North America employs more than 20,000 people in the
United States, Canada and Mexico, and generates more than 70,000 jobs through
more than 1,500 Nissan and Infiniti dealerships across the continent. More
