Notice to Data Switch Warrant Holders

    MUSKEGON, Mich., Jan. 7 -- General Signal Corporation has
been informed by the Warrant Agent for its Data Switch Corporation common
stock purchase warrants (now exercisable for shares of SPX Corporation common
stock) that no holders have accepted the General Signal Corporation change of
control offer made in accordance with the terms of the warrants, which offer
expired Monday, January 4, 1999.
    General Signal Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of SPX
