Jaguar Announces 1998 SalesDETROIT, Jan. 6 -- Jaguar North America today announced 1998 sales results for the United States, Canada and Mexico. In the U.S., Jaguar sales totaled 22,503 cars, a 15.4 percent increase compared with 1997. This total represents the highest volume for Jaguar in the U.S. for any full calendar year since 1988. Sedan sales were up 32.2 percent compared with 1997, totaling 16,642 for the year. "We are building momentum as we go into the launch of the all-new S-TYPE," said Mike Dale, president of Jaguar North America. "But even more heartening is that our customers are telling us that they are finding in Jaguar exactly what they are looking for: elegance, style and refined performance." Jaguar sales in Canada in 1998 were up 26.8 percent compared with 1997. Total sales of 1,293 cars in 1998 included 1,001 sedan sales, which were up 50.8 percent for the year. In its first full year of operations in Mexico, Jaguar sales totaled 115 cars. Jaguar also posted its best December in the U.S. since 1987, with sales totaling 2,472 cars, up 14.6 percent compared with December 1997. Sedan sales of 1,808 in December were up 7.3 percent and sports cars sales of 664 were up 40.4 percent compared with the same month a year ago. Total sales for sports cars in December 1998 represent the highest volume of December sports cars sales in Jaguar history. In Canada, Jaguar posted its best December in 10 years. Total sales of 147 cars were up 47 percent compared with December 1997. Sedans sales of 114 amounted to a 34 percent increase and sports car sales were up 120 percent compared with the same month a year ago. Worldwide, Jaguar sales hit an all-time record in 1998. For the first time in the company's 76-year history, Jaguar sold more than 50,000 cars in a single year. Jaguar's 1999 model year product lineup is on display at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit including: the XJ8, XJ8 L (not available in Canada), Vanden Plas and XJR sedans, and the XK8 coupe and convertible. Jaguar's current lineup features the award-winning 4.0-liter AJ-V8 engine as well as Jaguar's distinctive styling both inside and out. The all-new Jaguar S-TYPE goes on sales this spring.
